TITLE:  Truths of Terasem – “What is Terasem?”  2.10-2.10.6

SUB TITLE:  Time as an Enigma and a Multi-dimensional Idea

SUMMARY:  We think of time in many ways: primitive, low-tech, hi-tech, relativistic, and psycho-temporal or cognitive-process-related, but we are still at the early stages of understanding it to our satisfaction, and may never find it lacking in still further dimensionalities we missed earlier.

(Fred)  Hi, we’re Fred & Linda Chamberlain, with podcast 101 on the Truths of Terasem.  If you asked me what this week’s podcast is about, I might reply: It’s about time! And then I might ask you why you hadn’t asked the question earlier.  At any rate, you already know that we’re talking about that mysterious zone so often referred to as the “Fourth Dimension”, so we’d better get into it before we run out of time!

(Linda) As they say: “Time is of the essence”!  So let’s get with it!  The lead-in to this Expansion of the Truths of Terasem is 2.10: “End-of-Time doesn’t exist for Terasem because the Multiverse weaves new time and time is relative.”

(Fred) Things change!  Even with our crude, biological senses and without the use of motion picture cameras, we know that.  Moment to moment, time moves forward, and so far no reasonable conjectures exist as to how to reverse that, even though there are physics experiments that might suggest it is possible.

(Linda)  The first underlying Element seems like one that needs a mathematical explanation.  It’s 2.10.1:  “What has no beginning also has no end.”  If we think about that in mathematical terms, it makes sense, because the premise is that we are aware of something that has no beginning, in other words we presuppose it has been there already for an infinite period of time.

(Fred)  Right!  In mathematics we can do integral calculus that takes the starting point as negative infinity and integrates the process under analysis right to the present moment, or a point “zero” in time, but that doesn’t mean that in the actual, physical world we can find evidence of anything that suddenly comes to a stop and never moves forward.

(Linda) So, this is a mathematical conjecture, and it makes sense that anything that lacks a beginning is not likely to run into some kind of hypothetical wall and stop, thereby bringing a process that is already of infinite length to a close.

(Fred)  Let me put this in terms a little more flexible than brute-force logic, for a moment, quoting Carl Sagan from his Cosmos Episode titled The Edge of Forever, where he says,

“Every culture has a myth of the world before creation, and of the creation of the world, often by the mating of the gods or the hatching of a cosmic egg.  Commonly, the universe is naively imagined to follow human or animal precedent.

“These myths are tributes to human audacity.  The chief difference between them and our modern scientific myth of the Big Bang is that science is self-questioning, and that we can perform experiments and observations to test our ideas.  But those other creation stories are worthy of our deep respect.

“These profound and lovely images are, I like to imagine, a kind of premonition of modern astronomical ideas.  Very likely, the universe has been expanding since the Big Bang, but it is by no means clear that it will continue to expand forever.  The expansion may gradually slow, stop and reverse itself.  If there is less than a certain critical amount of matter in the universe, the gravitation of the receding galaxies will be insufficient to stop the expansion, and the universe will run away forever.  But if there is more matter than we can see—hidden away in black holes, say, or in hot but invisible gas between the galaxies—then the universe will hold together gravitationally and partake of a very Indian succession of cycles, expansion followed by contraction, universe upon universe, Cosmos without end.  If we live in such an oscillating universe, then the Big Bang is not the creation of the Cosmos but merely the end of the previous cycle, the destruction of the last incarnation of the Cosmos.

“Do we live in a universe that expands forever or in one in which there is an infinite set of cycles?  There are ways to find out, by making an accurate census of the total amount of matter in the universe, or by seeing to the edge of the Cosmos.”

(Linda) Carl Sagan wrote that back in 1980.  Since then, science has learned much. For example, from the Hubble Telescope website, dated November 16, 2006:

“Scientists using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope have discovered that dark energy is not a new constituent of space, but rather has been present for most of the universe’s history. Dark energy is a mysterious repulsive force that causes the universe to expand at an increasing rate. Investigators used Hubble to find that dark energy was already boosting the expansion rate of the universe as long as nine billion years ago. This picture of dark energy is consistent with Albert Einstein’s prediction of nearly a century ago that a repulsive form of gravity emanates from empty space. Data from Hubble provides supporting evidence to help astrophysicists to understand the nature of dark energy. This will allow them to begin ruling out some competing explanations that predict that the strength of dark energy changes over time.”

(Fred)  What an exciting time to be alive!  But, let’s move on.  In 2.10.2  we find: “Existing always, the Multiverse is the host of all reality, for ultimate beginnings are logical contradictions.”  And to again quote from Cosmos, by Carl Sagan:

“There is an idea—strange, haunting, evocative—one of the most exquisite conjectures in science or religion.  It is entirely undemonstrated; it may never be proved.  But it stirs the blood.  There is, we are told, an infinite hierarchy of universes, so that an elementary particle, such as an electron, in our universe would, if penetrated, reveal itself to be an entire closed universe.  Within it, organized into the local equivalent of galaxies and smaller structures, are an immense number of other, much tinier elementary particles, which are themselves universes at the next level, and so on forever—an infinite downward regression, universes within universes, endlessly.  And upward as well.  Our familiar universe of galaxies and stars, planets and people, would be a single elementary particle in the next universe up, the first step of another infinite regress.”

(Linda)  Next we come to, finally, how consciousness couples into time.  That’s what I’ve been waiting for.  In 2.10.3 we have: “Accumulated intelligence of double-exponential growth, coupled with universal nanotechnology, enables Terasem to redefine physics.”  Intelligence is time-related, and in ways that seem to foreshadow new ways of seeing ideas such as “immortality” entirely.  Ray Kurzweil, in his Introduction to the book, The Intelligent Universe, by James Gardner, says:

“Clearly, the universe we live in does appear to be an intelligent design, in that the constants in nature are precisely what are required for the universe to have grown in complexity.  If the cosmological constant, the Planck constant, and the many other constants of physics were set to just slightly different values, atoms, molecules, stars, planets, organisms, humans, and this book would have been impossible.  As James Gardner says, “A multitude of…factors are fine-tuned with fantastic exactitude to a degree that renders the cosmos almost spookily bio-friendly”.

Kurzweil continues: “How the rules of the universe happened to be just so is a profound question, one that Gardner explores in fascinating detail”.

(Fred) In the Forward to his book, The Intelligent Universe, James Gardner himself says:

“This book is the story of an idea, and the idea is quite simple:  The best way to think about life, intelligence, and the universe is that they are not separate things, but are different aspects of a single phenomenon.  To take liberties with a popular ballad, “We are the world, we are the people, and we are the universe”.   To state this proposition from the opposite perspective, the universe is coming to life and waking up through the processes of our lives and thoughts, and, very probably, through the lives and thoughts of countless other beings scattered throughout the cosmos”.

(Linda)  Wow, I hear Carl Sagan whispering in my ear again, “We are the local embodiment of a Cosmos grown to self-awareness.  We have begun to contemplate our origins: stars-stuff pondering the stars.”

(Fred)  Yes, he was not alone in that grand thought.  To quote a little more from James Gardner:

“Just how far will our nonbiological progeny move beyond those origins?  In Kurzweil’s exuberant view, very, very far, indeed.  In fact, he (Kurzweil) predicts that the ultimate destiny of brainy thinking machines will be to saturate the entire universe with intelligence,”

(Linda) And then Gardner quotes Kurzweil:

“In the aftermath of the Singularity, intelligence, derived from its biological origins in human brains and its technological origins in human ingenuity, will begin to saturate the matter and energy in its midst.  It will achieve this by reorganizing matter and energy to provide an optimal level of computation…to spread out from its origin on Earth…The ‘dumb’ matter and mechanisms of the universe will be transformed into exquisitely sublime forms of intelligence. In short, a capacity to engage in intelligent design of the entire universe is the predicted culmination of the biological and technological evolutionary process that began, so long ago, right here on Earth.”

(Fred)  Additional practical ideas on time utilization arise in the next Element, 2.10.4, which states: “Virtual time-sharing enables Terasem to escape from an end to objective time.”  This almost sounds like a future application of something like cloud computing, but on a vastly higher scale.  We’re not talking about sharing slide-rules or pocket calculators any more, and the days of taking your large tray of punch cards to the mainframe are over, too, not that time sharing was trivial, even then.  In the mid 1970’s, using mainframes that were the most powerful in the world and probably slower than present day laptops, it was possible to do auto design of elegant lens systems in eight seconds of machine time that humans with desk calculators of that time would have needed to work on for years, if they could ever have been designed at all.

(Linda)  Now, at the same time that we individual users can harness the vast power of Google to do searches, and large corporations rent computing time from cloud computing centers to do work that was previously unthinkable for them, we are still limited to such slow, memory-limited hardware by comparison with what we see coming that Kurzweil’s and Garner’s words have to be taken as we would expect from microbes trying to imagine what would be like to be humans.  Will we experience the same kinds of self-awareness as we do now, or something entirely different?  And will there be one jump after another upward?  What level of communication down-level will be possible, for those who are anticipating moving up-level?  We have so little ability based on direct experience to even find parallels, that this will be one of the most profound findings of emergent cyberconsciousness.

(Fred) This discussion may not at first appear to relate to the particular Truth we are addressing, but trying to imagine the subjective reality of experiencing a grandly higher level of transcendence takes one more into imaginative science fiction than into any chance of accurate foresight.

(Linda)  In 2.10.5 we find: “Escapes from this universe are as numerous as the galaxies and as limited as our intelligence.”  As far as I’m concerned, that’s a poetic way of trying to express in a very large scale way what we were trying to talk about in the last podcast, and as we know, predicting the future is (as Carl Sagan said about astrology) a “subtle and risky business”.

(Fred)  The last Element today is 2.10.6:  “Subjective time-space-energy is made infinite by repeatedly existing on only half of a finite remainder”.  That’s at least a bounded problem, far easier than the things we’ve been talking about up to this point.

(Linda) In fact, this takes us back to podcast #86, where 1.5.1 says “Expansion turns matter into intelligence per Turing’s Universal Computing (1950) and Von Neuman’s Universal Self-replicating machines (1960)” and 1.5.3 zeroes in even closer to today’s discussion with “Physics includes immortality per Dyson’s Eternal Life Postulate (1979) and Tipler’s closed universe cyber-resurrection (1989).  And that makes me appreciate the fact that these concepts have been tossed around by physicists for decades.  I find this quote from Freeman Dyson’s paper Time without End: Physics and Biology in an open universe, published in Reviews of Modern Physics in 1979 to be particularly inspiring:  “If my view of the future is correct, it means that the world of physics and astronomy is also inexhaustible; no matter how far we go into the future, there will always be new things happening, new information coming in, new worlds to explore, a constantly expanding domain of life, consciousness, and memory”.

Freeman Dyson’s paper is filled with so much math, for this podcast we need to find a more familiar way of discussing the idea in 2.10.6 that subjective time-space-energy is made infinite by repeatedly existing on only half of a finite remainder.

(Fred) Here’s how that works.  Let’s say that I only have twenty four hours left to live, but I really want to live forever.  There’s no limit on how many times I can double my thinking rate, my perception of subjective time.  How do I manage to literally live forever in 24 hours?

(Linda) Let’s see, working directly from the Truths above, the first hour, we live at normal subjective time speed, and then we double our speed of thought.  At that rate, we wait until my speeded up chronometer says that an hour has passed.  Now we’re one and a half hours into it.  We double our speed of thought once more, wait for an hour of subjective time to pass, but now, only fifteen minutes of real time has actually expired.

(Fred)  Exactly.  At this point, our speed of thought and action, our subjective time rate, has been doubled only twice, so we’re thinking at 4 times normal biohuman rate, and in the same way the next hour of our subjective time passes in only seven and a half minutes, then three and three quarters of a minute, and so on.  At this point, we can see that by repeated doublings we’ll never reach the two hour point!  So, wow, we can relax, back off, and start over.  We still have over 22 hours left!

(Linda) This time, we’ll be relaxed about it, because we know we’ve got it made.  We spend the first eleven hours at regular biological human rate, and get a good night’s sleep.  We’re going to need it!  Then, after doubling our rate, we wait for my speeded up watch to indicate another eleven hours have passed, and double it again.  In this way, as we close in on the full twenty four hours allowed, as our speed of thought climbs toward an infinite rate, we’ll still have a few minutes left without going over the twenty four hour limit, but… we will literally have lived forever. What do you think of that!
